Confessions Of A Shopaholic

Tuesday evening I went to a pre-screening of the movie “Confessions Of A Shopaholic” with Isla Fisher.  It was sort of a last minuteconfessions-of-a-shopaholic-01-thumb thing.  I entered my name a couple of weeks ago for tickets and found out the morning of the screening that I won a pair.

While waiting in line at the theater, I couldn’t help but notice certain women who were wearing boas with silly hats and a woman who had shopping bags tied to her clothes.

I discovered later that printed on the bottom of the preview passes (which I didn’t receive until just before entering the show), viewers who dressed like shopaholics had the opportunity to win 1 of 50 Confessions of A Shopaholic gift bags.   In front of the theater, we were presented with a red carpet to walk down while judges decided if you looked shopaholic enough for a gift bag.

There was also a photographer taking pictures of movie viewers in front of a screen-celebrity style- for a new local fashion magazine called StyleLine.

It certainly created a bit of a buzz before going into the movie and I couldn’t help but think about the unmistakeable timing of a movie about fashion set to open the same day as New York Fashion Week.

Confessions Of A Shopaholic-Fluffy But Cute

The movie is about a recent college graduate played by Borat’s baby mama, Isla (pronounced I-la) Fisher whose dream it is to work at a Vogue-like magazine in NYC.

After missing her opportunity to interview at the magazine, she settles for a job writing a financial column using the pen name “The Girl With A Green Scarf” at a financial magazine in an improbable twist of circumstances.

Isla’s character-Rebecca Bloomwood, becomes a star reporter who has a knack for explaining financial concepts in terms that the masses can understand.  The blatant irony is that Rebecca is dolling out financial advice to others while she herself, is over her head in credit card bills.  While working at the magazine, she predictably falls in love with her boss, played by the handsome Hugh Dancy.

Ultimately, her little white lies begin to unravel, and she is forced to come to terms with the consequences.

While I thought that the movie was cute and enjoyable to watch, I had to consider it’s PG rating and think of the movie as not one that was geared to win the hearts of Sex And The City fans, but one that a mother could enjoy with her teen daughter.

If you are viewing this with your kids, I would give this movie a B.  However, if you were thinking about going to see the movie with your girlfriends, I would wait until this one comes out on cable before I spent the $10 at the movie theater.

Shopping & Facebook Confessions

If you are interested in the clothes that Rebecca wears in the movie, I discovered that Blue Fly has partnered with the film as the official shopping site to get Confessions Of A Shopaholic inspired clothes.  Click on this link to hear Pat Field talk about her costume designs for Rebecca, see the trailer and even get a Confessions Facebook application.

Fashion Lesson #29: Spring 2009 Pear Shape

Today’s fashion lesson highlights a few spring trends for the Pear Shape.

Click on images for shopping information.

Bold Color

Bright Accessories 09'

This dress from J.Crew has a flattering silhouette for a woman with a tiny waist and fuller thighs.  Pairing it with a pop of color will brighten your spirits and add a little personality to a basic LBD.

One word of caution though, stick with just one colorful accessory.  Otherwise, you may look a little too bright.

Belts

Belts 4 Pear Shape

Lucky for the pear shaped lady, just about everything was belted during the spring 2009 shows.  You will look fantastic belting everything from sweaters to jackets and blouses to dresses.  Take advantage of this trend with any number of the above suggestions.

Nautical

Pear Shape

Pear Shape- RW&B

A staple for every spring collection, the nautical theme has lasting appeal.  A boat neck sweater broadens a pear’s narrow shoulders while a pair of wide leg trousers falling from the curve of your thigh gives you a lean look in these dark washed jeans.

The A-line skirt above flatters your small waist and when paired with a pair of flesh toned shoes, your legs will appear exceptionally long.

“Untouchable” Expenses

In a less is more economy, what are you willing to live without?

Pig

In a recent online survey conducted by BIGresearch and Stores magazine, over 4,100 respondents said Internet service, cell phone service, basic cable television, scoring a good deal on clothes at discount retailers and getting their regular cut and color were “untouchable” in cutting their own personal expenses.

Conversely, the “It” bag was the first thing to go for a whopping 92% of respondents.   It also appears that Americans were willing to cut loose Satellite radio, high-end boutiques, pricey cosmetics and their maids.

Aside from the basic necessities of life which in my mind include,  Internet, cell phone and cable services; in addition to my regular cut and color, I would have a hard time giving up my subscriptions to the Wall Street Journal, Vogue and InStyle magazines- although they are all on borrowed time.

Of the personal services that I still maintain (many of which where traded in upon motherhood) I would have a very hard time leaving my hairdresser/friend of 10 years, Minda.  I think I would weep like a baby in the chair of a discount chain hairdresser.

On the other hand, I am willing to trade in my trips to Caribou Coffee for a pot of home brew; downgrade my makeup, styling products and nail polishes (as painful as it is) to drugstore brands and borrow more books at the library instead of purchasing them.

How about you?  What are you willing to send to the chopping block and what would you consider “untouchable”?

Free Cosmetics

1130_311x311

As part of a class action settlement, some of retail’s biggest names such as Macy’s, Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus and Saks Fifth Avenue have begun dispensing some $175 million worth of free cosmetics and you can get yours too.

First, click on this link to see which stores near you are participating and what they will be giving away.

Next, boogie your butt on down to the mall today! Even though 990771_l this free cosmetic bonanza last’s 7 days, I just returned my local mall and the free cosmetics were going fast.  Some items were already gone when I arrived at my local Nordstrom.  I cued up in a line of about 30 people to receive my free mascara from Lancome.  There is one catch, you only get one item.

As I understand it, you are limited to one item period.  But I spoke with one woman in line who had gone to each of the four local participating stores.  She said “I spend a lot of money on this stuff.  They are only giving out sample sizes and I don’t feel guilty about going to each store.  We should be suing the lawyers who got this settlement!”

I asked another woman in line how she knew about this and she said that a couple of her co-workers came back from their lunch break with several bottles of perfume.

As I left Nordstrom, the trash cans were overflowing with the paper bags holding the free cosmetic.  Why?  Well, it appears that they were stuffing it in their purses and making a bee line down to Macy’s to get more free stuff.  While the rest of the mall was deserted, women could be seen wearing a path from Nordstrom to Macy’s and I saw another woman giving directions to another shopper to Neiman’s and Saks.

So if you want to get in on the giveaway, I suggest you check it out tonight. 🙂

P.S. Thanks Shannon for the tip!

Fashion Sensei Says…

On My Own…

Well, I didn’t win the free personal trainer for 6 weeks (boo-hoo!) so that means that I will have to motivate myself into getting in better shape.  I finally lifted a weight other than my two children today.  So back to the gym I go…  How’s everyone else doing?

Happiness Is…Free Loot!dorina2

To console myself after the loss of the personal trainer contest, I entered another contest to win some free boots and you can too.

The ladies over at Running With Heels are giving away a pair of fab new boots by La Canadienne.  The great thing about them is that they are made for comfort, are breathable and waterproof.  Something this MI gal can appreciate when there is a foot of snow on the ground!  Be sure to click on the link above to enter.

In other free loot news, head on over to the Fashion Sensei Coupons to see how you can win some more swag from jbandme.com.  Check back each week in February for new discounts and prizes.

Footloose And Fancy Green…

gview

I have gotten word that Zoe & Zac, in an alliance with model, environmentalist and eco trendsetter, Summer Rayne Oakes (yes that’s her God given name, and no she says, her parents are not hippies),  have partnered and designed a new eco-friendly brand of shoes for Payless this April.

In a statement from Payless,  the line is to include stylish footwear and “accessory products that are also green through the use of sustainable and eco-friendly materials such as organic cottons and linen, natural hemp and recycled outsoles, as well as the use of eco-smart packaging”.

The initial launch is to only include women’s products all priced under $30, and future lines will include expanded lines for children and men.

It’s So Sad To Say Good-Bye…

I received a disappointing e-mail yesterday from the owner of a local boutique called Gracie’s.  It said that after four years, she will be closing up shop.  Another victim of the Great Recession.

I stopped by Gracie’s when I first started my personal shopping service and she was so wonderful.  Not only was she willing to loan me clothes to take to my clients, but she even offered to deliver them to me.

I remember asking her how she chose the name Gracie’s.  She told me that if she ever had a daughter, she wanted to name her Gracie and since she does not have a daughter of her own, she was nurturing her “baby” Gracie in the form of a boutique.

Now that she is closing, it feels like a death of a dream.  And as someone who is chasing a dream of her own, it saddens me.

Her 75% off sale starts today, so if you live near Birmingham go check it out and wish Jill well.

What have you seen in your community and how has it affected you?  Leave me a comment.

The Cut, Clueless & Sexy Beijing

Now that all the holidays are over, I’ve been catching up on all that’s new in the fashion blog-o-sphere.  Here’s a sampling of what I found:

the cut–  00390m

NY Magazine’s fashion blog the cut had all sorts of interesting fashion news.

First, they delighted in speculation that Vogue editor, Anna Wintour may be the next French Ambassador for the Obama Administration.  Sounds a bit too far-fetched to me, but it doesn’t sound like the fashion world would be too sorry to see her go, according to the cut:

[T]he fashion world is buzzing over the rumor that Wintour might leave “with a guillotine glee akin to that which preceded the death of Marie Antoinette.”

No Sale, No Teenagers

In another bit of elitist news, there are reports that Versace storesversace refuse to put their merchandise on sale to dissuade the likes of us common folk and the more insidious demographic: teen girls.

“Our regular client was not queuing on January 3-4 in Milan or Rome but was on the slopes in St Moritz or on a boat in the Caribbean,” he said. “We want to offer a real luxury and not to open our doors to the consumption of young girls who can put the designer handbag of their dreams on their arm with less than 300 Euros. We are not interested in that.”

I for one was working with a client ( a lovely one at that) instead of cruising the Caribbean on Jan. 3rd and on the 4th, I was involved with something that Versace would deem blasphemous: grocery shopping!  I’m not sure I will be invited to a Versace party any time soon…

Are You Kidding?!100073162

And the last bit of news from the cut involves the indie- stylista- actress Chloë Sevigny.  In an interview for Esquire magazine, miss Sevigny states:

“I don’t really have any concept of how money works. I don’t know how much things cost. Like a BMW. Or a quart of milk. It’s embarrassing.”

Comments like that make me want to slap her silly.  But since it appears that she is already silly and I am not a violent person,  I will instead offer a standing invitation to come grocery shopping with me on any given Sunday.  Love you Chloë .

My New Fav: Sexy Beijing

logo-1

So while I was catching up on all the new fashion blogger news, I visited Fashion nation and discovered this fantastic site called Sexy Beijing.  It’s an internet production based in Beijing, China that involves an American woman interviewing the Chinese people on topics involving: love, relationships, sex and women’s issues.

Channeling Carrie Bradshaw of Sex And The City, creator Anna Sophie Loewenberg, a.k.a. Su Fei, travels the city interviewing the Chinese people about the afore mentioned topics and in turn, brings us closer to a culture that many of us here in the West, have never seen.

In a video presently on the main page of her site, she interviews Chinese construction workers on their love lives and what qualities a good wife embodies.

Upon viewing the video, I was first struck by Anna Sophie’s fantastic Mandarin accent.  It was as though a local Chinese woman had taken over her body.  After living in China for a decade, she seems to have perfected a Mandarin accent.

I was also fascinated by how candid these men were in answering her questions.  The men in her piece were very open to share their opinions.

As a Western woman, my interest was piqued a couple of times when I learned that matchmakers were still commonly used in the country and by a reply from one of the workers who viewed beauty as useless.

When asked what was more important, looks or cooking skills, the man replied, “Cooking skills.  Good looks are useless right?  What good is beauty if I don’t eat well?”  Quite a polar opposite to American men don’tcha think?

I encourage you to check out her site for yourself.  To read an article about her from CNN, click here.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Happy New Year: A New Year, A New You

Doesn’t that seem to be the mantra that every magazine, morning news show and everything in between seem to say at the beginning of every January?

It feels as though January has become Body Awareness Month.   “Happy Body Awareness Month everyone!”  As if the other eleven months don’t offer enough reminders to eat less, look younger and to lust after the figure of a pubescent girl.

Look, I’m not angry.  It’s just an observation.  It’s the culture we live in.  But each year at the beginning of January, we are forced to reflect on how we view our bodies.  Do we need to lose weight?  Firm up or just eat healthier?

I for one, could stand to do all of the above.  After losing close to 100 lbs (I weighed about 240 on the day I delivered my eldest son) three years ago, I have been really struggling not to gain it all back.

I don’t have six days to work out anymore.  My kids require my taxi driving services far too much during the day to fit in a workout.  I could do it at 8:00pm after they go to bed, but who wants to do that?  I still work out when I can, just not six days.

So I just have to be careful about what I put in my mouth and keep my body image feelings in check.  I can’t call myself a cow if I eat a cookie or say, “well you’re going to gain all that weight back again”.

I am a firm believer in what you believe,  you become.  Notice I said what you believe.  Thinking and believing are two different things.  I keep thinking, someday I will win the lotto and never have to worry about money again.  But do I believe it in my soul? Eh- I’m a little wishy washy. Not to mention I would have to play the lotto a little more often. 🙂

It was really interesting how I was viewed after I lost all my weight.  My family was really worried that I was losing too much weight.  But when you come from an overweight family, what is “normal” can get a little skewed.

People who didn’t know me when I was fat, just assumed that I was always this size.  The funny thing is, they viewed me as the “skinny bitch” now.  Me, the girl who used to shop in what my girlfriend endearingly called “the big girls section”.

So that starts to mess with your mind a little.  You start apologizing, no, no, I’m just like you.  Look, I’m starting to gain all the weight back.  And then I did.  I’ve gained about 10lbs (maybe more- I was afraid to weigh myself today at the gym after all the terrible things I ate and drank over the holiday.)

At what point do I just say, it’s ok.  Stay at the weight that makes me feel comfortable in my own skin?

I’m working on it.  Oprah had an interesting show yesterday talking about this very subject and her frustration with her own weight.  She says that she eats to fill a void.

I would agree with that statement.  Eating makes me feel good sometimes.  If I’m feeling anxious I might nibble on something.  If I want to celebrate, I like to go out to dinner or have a cocktail.

I’m not sure there is any good answer on body image, except to take care of the one you live in.  You wouldn’t fill your house with a bunch of trash and expect to feel comfortable would you?  How would you get around in your house if it were piled up with trash?

I think I will remind myself of this analogy when I want to eat to fill a void.  According to Oprah, I need to then ask myself what is the void that I am trying to fill?  That’s a heady question- and one that I would rather try to avoid.

All this analization of our bodies is just too much.  I’ve made a resolution this year to focus on my relationships with others instead.  I want to connect with someone everyday.  Even if it’s just an e-mail that says “Hi”.

Maybe then I will be more focused on what truly makes me happy instead of finding an artificial replacement.  At least that’s what Oprah says will happen.

So what do you think?  I really want to have a conversation about this.  What do you struggle with and how are you resolving to make it better this year?

Happy New Year!

Hi everyone, Happy New Year!  I hope that you had a wonderful holiday.

I enjoyed some time with family and friends, worked a little and of course did a little shopping.  Oh- and I finally got my braces off! Yahoo!  I have to wear my retainer full time until next year, but it is so nice to have the braces off. 🙂

If you haven’t already be sure to scroll down and check out the series on makeup that went up just before Christmas.  The makeup artists that I worked with on the piece had a lot of valuable information.

So now it’s catch up time.  I appreciate the comments that I have been getting from you and will work on responding to each of you this week.

I am also working on a piece on body image for the New Year and would love to get your input.  If you are interested in contributing, send me your thoughts by the end of the day tomorrow.  fashionsensei(@)gmail.com

Further, I would really like your input on topics that you would like to see covered here on Fashion Sensei.  One of my objectives this year for the blog, is to make it a little more interactive.  So if you have any suggestions, be sure to let me know.

I don’t have much time to write today.  I was notified over the weekend that my eldest son’s class will be having their holiday party today because school was canceled on the day of their party due to a huge snowstorm.

The snow day was the same day I was set to get my braces off, but I was hell bent on getting those braces off and nothing was going to stop me.  I kept joking that I was going to pull my kids on a sled to the orthodontist if I had to.  After two long years, there was no way I was going to wait any longer.  That day we had 5 inches of snow on the ground when we set off to the ortho and by 3:00pm we had somewhere around 10 inches total.

So getting back to my son’s party.  This morning, I have to go get 20 helium filled balloons and somehow transport them in my car back to the school.  Secretly, I was happy school got canceled, because I had no idea how they were all going to fit in the car.  Well, I guess I will find out today.  I’m sure it will be hilarious.

Ok guys, that’s it for today.  I’m anxious to hear about what’s been happening with you,  so please leave me a comment.  Also, keep an eye out for some outrageous sales today.  The word is retailers are looking to liquidate their fall merchandise today to make room for spring.  I saw that Bluefly is offering an additional 30% off their sale prices for up to 80% off!  I saw this BCBG black blazer for only $77.90 , market down from $278.  It’s a very practical staple.

Talk to you again soon!

Holiday Makeup Tips- Karin Noel and Lizza Monet Morales

I hope you all had a wonderful holiday. 🙂

In today’s last installment on Holiday Makeup, expert makeup artist Karin Noel, will share her thoughts on the topic along with Hollywood reporter, Fashion and Lifestyle Consultant, Lizza Monet Morales.

Here’s is the transcript of responses Karin and Lizza provided me.  Let’s read what the ladies had to say:

Q. What colors are right for me (ex. how do women pick the right shades that compliment their eyes and skin tone)?

A. Here is a a basic formula for picking eyeshadows that complement a women’s eye color. Depending on skin tone, the amount that you apply would be different. In general, the darker you are, the heavier your application of a color so that it always pops. But remember- rules are made to be broken if you know how to break them.

* Green eyes do well with anything in the plum or cool tones

* Blue eyes do well with anything in the golden or warm tones, as they are the opposite of each other on the color wheel, which makes the eyes pop.

* Brown eyes also do well with warm golden tones to dark chestnuts. However, for an extra WOW factor, try midnight blue.

* For everyone though, if you aren’t sure if you can pull off applying the color on your own then there is no shame in playing it safe with neutral tones.  Actually, you will embody a classic look, which is a guaranteed hit!!

Q. Am I too old to wear trendy shades?

A. A woman is never too old to wear trendy shades, it’s just how she wears them that differs. Take a runway look for example- more often than not, these looks are not intended to be exactly recreated for street wear. Instead, they are meant to be modified appropriately for individual use. Which means, that if you are 40 and are dying to wear a glitter than maybe just add a bit to the corner of your eyes for some pop. As opposed to putting heavy glitter on your whole eye, which doesn’t look well on anyone regardless of age unless you are going for costume make-up. If a trendy shade is used in a subtle way, it can make you feel so sassy.

If you are ever in doubt, then book an appointment with an experienced make-up artist and ask how you can modify the current makeup trends you are interested in to work for you.

Q. What are the key tools necessary to get the best evening look?

A.  Makeup, like cooking, is about following certain steps to create a specific result. So why then can someone follow the same steps but get a different result each time? Like any great chef will tell you, the secret ingredient to recreating your recipe time and time again is the specific tools you use! The better tools, the better the results. The same theory applies to make-up. A good set of brushes is important to correctly applying eyeshadow, blush, and foundation.

*Insider tip-Professional make-up artists like to mix-n-match the brands of their brushes and you can too. Don’t feel stuck to using the brush in a set you bought that might not be working for you. Better yet, rather than buying a pre-made set of brushes, make your own!! While one brand may make a fantastic blush brush, another brand may have the best concealer brush. Don’t be afraid to experiment and invest properly in your brushes. If taken care of, they will last you several years. Go to several makeup counters or stores and feel the brush against your skin and compare the textures of the brushes. They are available at all price points. Remember to bring this list with you and you will know exactly what brushes you need to buy for your personal make-up kit.

If you are on a budget these are the 3 essential brushes you need:

1. Angle Brush– This is a double duty brush that should be used for lining your eyes AND filling in your eyebrows.

2. Flat Brush– This should be used for applying the lightest color on your eye, for blending and for layering colors.

3. Crease Brush– This brush should be used to create the 1/2 circle arch on your eyelid. It does takes the guess work out of creating your smokey eye.

If you can splurge a bit more, then add these to your kit:

1. Blush Brush– This brush should be used with just your blushes and not your bronzer ladies.

2. Powder Brush– When buying this brush, make sure that it has a beveled end. This is so it can get to all the contours of your face which is angled.

3. Bronzer Brush– This is a dedicated brush for your bronzer, which has a darker pigment than your blushes.

4. Foundation Brush– Eliminate streaks and helps you naturally blend around your neck line.

5. Concealer Brush– Gives you better control of how much is applied and allows you to spot treat.

Q. How do I apply eyeshadow, blush, foundation etc.

A. Now that we have our proper brushes, let’s start applying our makeup.

EYES:

*Eyeshadow- start with lightest color first and work into the darker shades.

* You want to finish with eyeliner then lots of mascara.

*If you want that extra glam look, don’t be scared to apply some lashes too!

CHEEKS:

* Blush- a general rule is to pick a color that resembles what you cheeks would look like if you were naturally blushing. Then place the blush on just the apples of your cheeks.

* I also recommend a light bronzer for your temples, chin, neck line, any area you would like a little extra color.

FACE:

*When selecting a foundation color on your own, test a foundation shade on your neck to see if it matches. This is a better sampling of your skin color as opposed to the back of your hand. It will also prevent you from having a line of demarcation between what’s on your face and your natural color on your neck.

LIPS:

* This all depends on how dark or light your eyes are. However, the color trend of the season is wearing red or wine tones are your lips. Have some fun the next time you are at the make-up counter or with your make-up artist and experiment with the different shades available and pick the one that is right for you.

FOR A CLASSIC  EVENING LOOK:

I’m a big fan of a smokey eye. Here’s an easy way of recreating this at home.

1. You start by applying a highlight color for just under your brow.

2. You then add a little darker shade next, maybe a taupe, a bronze, or a dark beige. This will go on your lid-brow bone area and under your eye.

3. Then add a black or black-brown shadow on your lower lid of your eye. And also right at the lash line underneath the eye.

4. Follow this up using a black pencil or liquid liner along the top and bottom lashes. For a more dramatic look, line inside the eye with a pencil.

5. If you choose this look, I would stick with a light shade for your lips so it doesn’t take away from your eyes.

A SIMPLE DRAMATIC EVENING LOOK:

This look is very easy to do and reflects the current trend of wearing your make-up as they did in the 40’s:

1. Use a neutral eyeshadow on your lid.

2. Follow with a liquid liner just on the top lid.

3. Fill-in a more dramatic brow.

4. Your lips are the key to this look. You want to use a deep color on them.

5. Of course, you could add false eyelashes for an extra pop.

Q. Solutions for common mistakes women over 30 make?

A. It has been my experience that it isn’t necessarily mistakes that women make, but rather lack of education that is the issue. I believe that if every woman made an appointment with a makeup artist for a makeup lesson, it would make their lives so much easier. They would walk-away with a true understanding of their particular bone structure, their coloring, how to use their tools properly, and what does and doesn’t work for their face. As a result, they would be empowered to go anywhere and anyplace and buy makeup!!!!

*Insider tip- Makeup is a mood, if you love it, it will love you and look amazing on you! always have the confidence to rock it!!!!

Q:  Are there any rules that women in their 30’s, 40’s, 50’s+ should be following?

A:  As for general rules, there are three big ones that apply no matter what your age.

1. Never wear a dark liner just on the outside of your lips and a light frost lipstick just inside the liner.  While this is great for Halloween, it doesn’t make for a youthful attractive mouth!

2.  It is vitally important to match you foundation properly to your face and neck. Otherwise, you will look like you had a head transplant which leans more on scary than sexy.

3. Ladies, please don’t overdo the mascara!!  It’s bad for the lashes and you look like a crazed Barbie doll. Relax on the double pumping of the wand, all you are doing is pushing air into the tube which is bad for the mascara. The more air, the less your mascara lasts and the easier it clumps.

The following is from Karin Noel and “Hollywood’s go-to Fashion and Lifestyle expert”, Lizza Monet Morales:

For all women 30 and above:

You should have a strong skin regime started by the time you are 30 and should be getting regular facials. As long as you can lift your arms and drive or be driven to the spa, this should be something you never stop doing.

Women in their 30’s:

As Karin mentioned above, this is the time when you want to start with a regular skin care regime if you haven’t already. In regard to makeup- have fun with it and experiment. Personally, we both like to do our makeup according to how we feel that day. For example, If Karin is feeling sassy, she might choose to only wear a red lipstick and nothing else. Remember, makeup is a mood. If you like it, and are confident, it will look cool. For Lizza, your 30’s are all about being flirty not with just men but with life. Experimenting is your key word during this time. You are finally coming into your own and realizing that wearing  your confidence, not just saying you are, is the true secret to glamour.

Women in their 40’s:

Women tend to freak out when they turn 40, but you are really just hitting your prime. Why do you think the media is now so obsessed with the concept of “cougar” women these days? Which proves that Ashton Kutcher isn’t the only one with his eye on older women!!  So, your in your 40’s…be proud of it!!  Don’t freak out all of a sudden and try to wear what you did in high school as a way of holding onto your youth. You want to find colors that will make you look polished and classy. There isn’t anything sexier than a put together woman. One of Lizza’s favorite quotes comes from Simone de Beauvoir who wisely stated, “one is not born a woman, one becomes one.”

Women in their 50’s:

Lizza points out that Baby Boomers have really defined 50 as being the new 20 by breaking the rules and creating their own. There isn’t a better time than now to be in your 50’s.  Whether you are volunteering, traveling, working or gardening, your personality comes out in everything you do and your make-up shouldn’t hide it.

As a result, Karin suggests that following the less-is-more approach to your make-up to keep up with your active lifestyle. Let who you are shine with your make-up. A neutral shade on the lips with a blush that gives you a natural glow and some mascara are all you really need. You definitely want to try to avoid too much frost on the eyes and sparkle on the face.

Fashion Sensei readers also posed a couple of questions to our experts.  Take a look at what advice Karin had to offer:

Q:  “I am not very sure what base color of correctors should I use. Can you help? I am Asian, fair.”

A:  First off, it is important to know what you are trying to correct. A concealer is meant for use around the eye area and camouflage is meant for other areas on the face, such as blemishes, broken capillaries, brown spots. The common mistake is to use concealer for everything and that doesn’t typically produce the results we are after. The reason for this is that concealer is more hydrating and softer than camouflage. Simply put, it doesn’t have the right consistency to do the tough stuff. Remember, it is meant to brighten and deal with dark circles if necessary.

That said, let’s talk about how to handle dark circles under our eyes. You would want to use a a warm beige tone to cover blue/purple circle. But if your circles are green, yellow, or brown, then a pinkish beige tone will do.

Of course, if you are not correcting anything and are just after a little more of a flawless look, then you want the concealer to match your skin. After applying, you must set the concealer with a light powder, this prevents it from moving around. You will only need to use a small amount and pat it around the eye.

Now as I originally mentioned, if you are covering up any area beside your eyes then you will use camouflage instead. You will find that camouflage is dryer and has more pigment in it. As a result, it will stay in place better. I am a firm believer in mixing colors too in order to get the perfect shade that matches you.

Once you have your camouflage shade, you will need a small synthetic brush and setting powder to apply it correctly. You start with putting a small amount of product on the back of your hand. This warms it up and if you need to mix, it’s a perfect spot. You always want to layer, meaning start with small amounts and slowly work it around. you never want to look like you have cake batter under you eyes or on you face! EEK!! Definitely not glamorous.

Q:  (From a male reader) I would like to know the expert’s opinion/advice on makeup on men, and if it could work in a setting besides movies/television/media/formal settings…

Answer: I was soooo excited to get this question. Men can ABSOLUTELY wear makeup!!!!! My approach to make-up is the same whether a man or woman is sitting in my makeup chair. Meaning that one of the key goals of applying make-up is to even out  the skin and making it look as if you aren’t wearing anything.  This is in contrast to makeup that is used on TV, stage, film or even a formal event where the make-up is applied much heavier to compensate for dilution of color that happens when you are on camera or on stage. In this case, the makeup is very obvious to the eye in person but will appear softer on-camera or from a distance.

If I had to pick a foundation that works for men or women who are after a very natural look then I would go for two of Makeup Forever’s products. I just love them!!  Their foundation and HD powder gives the user a” natural no make-up” type of makeup look! Laura Mercier’s products would also give you winning results. Remember to have fun, go natural or glam it up, either way if you rock your confidence it will be sexy!!
