Karl Lagerfeld : “Curvy Women Have No Place on the Catwalk”

The Kaiser is at it again.  If you remember, designer Karl Lagerfeld took pot-shots at Heidi Klum for being too fat for the runways.  Well, he’s now spouting off to news magazine Focus, “No one wants to see curvy women”.

Even worse, he is quoted as saying:

"You’ve got fat mothers with their bags of chips sitting in front of the television and saying that thin models are ugly". [independent.co.uk]

What’s wrong with you Karl?  That’s just downright offensive.

Apparently someone does want to see curvy women, because Glamour has already committed to using a broader range of body sizes in their fashion pages.  And in a surprising move by Brigitte, the popular German fashion magazine,  the magazine will no longer use professional models due to the overwhelming requests by their readership to feature women that they can relate to.

Can you believe it?!

The revolution moving forward.  Get with it Karl.  Starving models are not pretty and finally someone is listening!

Paris Fashion Week: Spring 2010

Those of you who watch Rachel Zoe’s reality show know her famous phrase “I die!” when she see’s something beautiful.  I would say this sums up the incredible fashion displayed at Paris Fashion Week.

When you review the images from the events, one thing to keep in mind is that when executing a fashion show, it’s necessary for the designer  to juggle demonstrating their creativity, pleasing retailers and entertaining the audience.  This may explain why we see some really crazy displays making their way down the runway.

That being said, here are a few shows that I thought were noteworthy.

Valentino, the house best known for their signature red dresses, are paving a new path now that Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pier Paolo Piccioli have begun designing for the luxury house.

The collection embodied several trends that we can expect to see come spring: ruffles, sheer fabrics, shorts and lace.

Legendary milliner Phillip Treacy took his famous hat making skills and transferred them to stunning effect with the lace wings on the incredible shoes below.

John Galliano is well known for his theatrical styling and entertaining shows. This collection is no exception.  Once again you will see an abundance of lace and sheer fabrics with an infusion of colorful accents.  It was difficult to focus my attention to a single piece in this collection—inspired by early Hollywood stars such as Mary Pickford, with the artistic (and dangerously spiked) platforms that competed for ones attention.

Finally, with all the sheer materials draping the models, you’ll understandably gravitate to the lingerie inspired collection by Jean Paul Gaultier for a little Puritanical privacy.

Further, the collection epitomizes creativity over wearablity with the maternal looking olive green bustier below along with the commando style belt.

Plaid to Meet You!

A trend I’m sure you have noticed by now are the plaid patterns that are popping up on bags, shoes, jackets and dresses.  I’ve also admired a groomsman styled in cranberry colored plaid pants and a charcoal sport coat as a daring alternative to the traditional tuxedo for a wedding.

I thought today I would share with you some of my favorite plaid finds.  I’m sure this goes without saying—but one only needs a single plaid item to make your point. :)  That means no matching a plaid shirt with plaid shoes!

Mantyhose?!

Seinfeld popularized the Manziere, and now a UK lingerie brand called Unconditional is banking on men rushing to the stores to purchase their 120 denier thickness man tights (£70 a pair).

David Walker-Smith, Selfridges’ director of menswear and beauty, said: “This winter the city’s most stylish men will have a secret weapon hidden in their trousers.

“The ‘mantyhose’ are extremely versatile and we expect men to be wearing them not only as a way to as a way to give legs an extra boost of warmth on the chilliest nights, but as a true style statement.”  [Telegraph.co.uk]

The only explanation that I can venture is that they are worried about Marc Jacobs’ bare legs under that manskirt he has been sporting at his runway shows.

You Go Glamour!

Glamour Magazine is featuring plus size (that’s any model over a size 6) models in their November edition to answer the call of readers who want to see a body type closer to the one that they see in the mirror.

I salute their effort and can’t help but wonder if this summer’s call from Vogue UK’s editor,  Alexandra Shulman,  to high-fashion designer’s to create samples that fit healthy proportions helped encourage Glamour Magazine.  Glamour editor, Cindi Leive, announced this morning on the Ellen Show, that the magazine is making a commitment to include models with a wider range of body types.  Bravo!

Hold On To Your Hair, First Lady of Cameroon’s Style Screams For Attention

2009-09-28-biya5

While surfing the net today I ran across a report on both The Cut and the Huffington Post about Cameroon’s first lady Chantal Biya, 39,—a woman who looks like a cast member from the popular 80’s television show Dynasty.  Her wig is so high and big, I think Kim from the Real Housewives Atlanta may be taking notes for her future wig line.

2009-09-28-biyaI’m puzzled as to what part of her style is covetable, but she is so wildly popular in her native country, that they have named her signature hair style after her and she is inciting trends among her country women.

No doubt, some designer will use her as inspiration for their fall 2010 collection…

What do you think?

Fashion Sensei News Clips…

We go from a summer with very little to report from the fashion world, to fashion news bursting from every direction.  Here’s a few highlights about what’s new…

Weird Models Out—Pretty is in Again…

Photo: Oscar de la Renta, Style.com

The Wall Street Journal  reports that edgy models with sometimes strange features are being replaced by the girl-next-door types.  It seems that unconventional beauty doesn’t sell during a recession and with the fashion world begging for business (see Fashion’s Night Out), companies are looking to conventional beauties, also known as “commercially” appealing to draw shoppers back to buying again and to pull the industry out from declining sales.

While there is a resurgence of harem pants, padded shoulders and anything 80’s, fashion forecasters predict that ladylike suits and classic styles will prevail this fall.

All I can hear in the back of my mind, is Tyra Banks chastising models for looking “too commercial”.  It looks like the tide has turned and we’ll be seeing updated versions of Christy Brinkley and Naomi Campbell.  Let’s just hope that super-skinny size zero is out too. [WSJ.com]

Shop Till You Drop…

Due to the recession, we have all shut our wallets and have only been buying the essentials.  Shopping sprees have become so 2007, and the folks who still have the money to spend have been shamed into restraint.

Enter Anna Wintour.

The uber influential editor of American Vogue has become so concerned about the state of the fashion industry, and therefore the future of her own magazine, Wintour gathered up all the big names in fashion including Oscar de la Renta, Carolina Herrera and Vera Wang—among other notables—and has contrived a world wide shopping holiday called Fashion’s Night Out.

Set for September 10, the global effort to get us back out to the mean streets of retail emporiums world wide, a whose-who of the fashion world, have been assembled to entertain us—Oscar de la Renta is slated to sing (who knew he could sing?) and Issac Mizrahi is set for a one-night-only engagement at Bergdorf Goodman.  Further,  Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen will customize clothes from their label Row.

For those of you going out for the festivities, be sure to report back!

To read more about the event and the participating designers, go to www.fashionsnightout.com .  Wanna chance to win $5,000 shopping spree? Click here to enter Fashion’s Night Out: Shop For Good Online Sweepstakes.

Speaking of Vogue

The September Issue is set to hit theaters this fall.  It will chronicle the five months leading up to the ever-important fall 2007 issue.  Remember this was the magazine’s biggest issue in history, 840 pages, and weighing in at 4lbs of fabulous fashion (remember my post on the 2009 fall issue at a meager 584 pages?).

The movie is said to probe the dynamic between two of fashion’s most powerful women.  Wintour, nearly any woman who has ever picked up an issue of Vogue knows, but Grace Coddington, the creative director and fashion editor may be a new name to some.  The documentary reveals the behind-the-scenes struggle between the two women and just how the world’s most famous fashion magazine is created.

I can’t wait!

I’m hoping to get my hands on some local preview passes.  If I do, I’ll be sure to give you the low-down on the movie!

Trend Watch: Chain Gang

A major trend you will see emerging this fall is the abundance of chains.  Be it used as a handle for a handbag—or even the body of a handbag for that matter, chains have been used as a major statement necklace, earrings or strung together as a bracelet.  One thing is certain, you will be sure to find chains at all price points.  Here’s a look at a few products that I found online.
