Louis Vuitton Sells Scraps As Art?

46446581

Photo: STEFANO PALTERA, FOR THE LA TIMES

Louis Vuitton is in some hot water with a man who purchased $12,000 worth of what he thought was limited edition art, two years ago by artist Takashi Murakami.  It turns out, that the prints were merely scraps of leather mounted as art.  Now he is suing LV which could possibly cost the company 12 million dollars.  Read more at latimes.com.

Save The Earth and Money—Swap Clothes

 clothes-swap

  Photo: Serge Krouglikoff/GettyImages

Growing up, my younger sister and I would borrow each other’s clothes all the time.  The practice continued with my High School and College friends.  I can’t help but laugh when I look at old photos of myself and friends, all outfitted from one person’s closet.

With Wednesday being Earth Day, and the fact that the economy is still trying to pick itself up out of this recession, swap parties have become a popular way of saving money and embracing some eco-friendly ideals.

The idea is to gather a group of friends, each of whom bring 4 or more items of clothing, jewelry, accessories or shoes, to swap with other friends.  These items may be new or gently used items that you no longer find a need for.  In return, you get to take home an equal number of items—thus preventing them from decomposing (or not) in a landfill.

If you are thinking of having a Swap Party, here are a few tips:

  • Grab a Large Group of Friends.  The bigger the party the better.
  • Encourage Each Person to Bring Anything of Value.  This could be apparel, shoes, accessories, jewelry and even unused cosmetics or hair products.  Don’t forget the maternity wear too.  You may be done having kids, but there may be someone at the party who is planning on having children soon.
  • Food, Music and Libation!  The best way to save money is to make the party a pot luck, where each guest brings a dish to pass.  Then you need some inspiring, up beat music to get everyone in the mood.  Last, but certainly not least, enjoy a few cocktails with the girls while you relax.  You may also want to have some non-alcoholic drinks on hand for those who wish to abstain and your pregg-0 gal pals.
  • Rock the Runway.  Now that everyone is in a comfortable frame of mind, turn the music up and have everyone show off their new looks with a little runway show!

If the Swap Party doesn’t appeal to you, or if you have more of an entrepreneurial spirit, you could sell your clothes on e-bay or swapstyle.com—a virtual swap party from around the world.  One can swap anything from clothes to CDs.

Has anyone attended or hosted a swap party?  If so, let us know what your experience was like.

Bye-Bye “It” Bags

Say hello to the hottest new accessory for spring.

In a reversal of fortune for the high priced seasonal designer handbag, otherwise known at the “it” bag- bangles, bracelets and cuffs are all making a comeback this spring.

Seen stacked high and dancing on the arms of runway models, bracelets add a little personality to your overall look.  Although the price of some bracelets combined can cost just as much as a designer bag (think Hermès) stores like Forever 21 and H&M offer some of springs latest trends for a fraction of the price.

To get the runway look, why not use the above photos or pictures from your favorite fashion magazine, as a guide while shopping?  Here are a few other options I found online in a variety of price points.

Fashion Lesson #29: Spring 2009 Pear Shape

Today’s fashion lesson highlights a few spring trends for the Pear Shape.

Click on images for shopping information.

Bold Color

Bright Accessories 09'

This dress from J.Crew has a flattering silhouette for a woman with a tiny waist and fuller thighs.  Pairing it with a pop of color will brighten your spirits and add a little personality to a basic LBD.

One word of caution though, stick with just one colorful accessory.  Otherwise, you may look a little too bright.

Belts

Belts 4 Pear Shape

Lucky for the pear shaped lady, just about everything was belted during the spring 2009 shows.  You will look fantastic belting everything from sweaters to jackets and blouses to dresses.  Take advantage of this trend with any number of the above suggestions.

Nautical

Pear Shape

Pear Shape- RW&B

A staple for every spring collection, the nautical theme has lasting appeal.  A boat neck sweater broadens a pear’s narrow shoulders while a pair of wide leg trousers falling from the curve of your thigh gives you a lean look in these dark washed jeans.

The A-line skirt above flatters your small waist and when paired with a pair of flesh toned shoes, your legs will appear exceptionally long.

Sex And The City Sequel One Step Closer…

According to Entertainment Weekly, the sequel to last spring’s SATC movie is set to start filming this summer.  Although none of the four stars have formally signed a contract, all are said to be on board.

It will be interesting to see if the girls will be touched by our real life economy.  I’m curious to see if any of the girls have joined the recessionista crowd or how Big’s investments are doing.

Mad Men Designer Working On Her Own Line…

Fans of the acclaimed AMC show Mad Men will be thrilled to hear that costume designer Janie Bryant is developing her own clothing line.

Bryant who was nominated for a 2009 Costume Designers Guild Award (and should have won) inspired designers Michael Kors and Peter Som’s fall 2008 collections with her 60’s style pencil skirts and suits.

The collection is reported to be more contemporary and reflect the designer’s southern roots.  The line is currently being finalized and Bryant teased “I’m keeping my fingers crossed that I’ll have news in the next couple of months.”  I can’t wait. [Heard On The Runway]

I had the great fortune to write for them last year and am thrilled to be asked back.

You may be wondering what I wrote about.  Well, it involves high heel shoes, exercise and an embarrassing spill.

Shoppers Cast Your Vote!

85386723_27e4b567f5

When you go shopping, you want to feel good about your purchase, right?  You also want a helpful sales person or customer service associate available if you need assistance.

Recently, the results from the National Retail Federation Foundation/American Express Customers’ Choice survey were released.

Here are the top ten:

  1. L.L. Bean
  2. Overstock.com
  3. Zappos.com
  4. Amazon.com
  5. Lands’ End
  6. New Egg.com
  7. JCPenny
  8. QVC
  9. Coldwater Creek
  10. Nordstrom

The survey, which polled 8,167 consumers asked, “Thinking of all the different retail formats (store, catalog, internet, or home shopping), which retailer delivers the best customer service?”

So my dear Fashion Sensei Readers, this is my question to you today.  Who would you choose? (It doesn’t have to be anyone mentioned above.) Who would you vote as having the WORST customer service?  Be sure to leave a comment.
