Fashion Sensei Says…

doll-with-white-back

Hi everyone, this very late edition of Fashion Sensei Says… comes with some fancy new fonts that I have been experimenting with.  I just discovered that there is a new edition to Windows Live Writer so I have been playing with some of the new features.

My apologies for the scarcity of posts.  I think the stomach virus’ that have been wreaking havoc in my household have finally subsided (fingers crossed).

Man Skirts?

View Style.com Man Skirts

The NY Times is blaming Marc Jacobs for the new skirt trend seen on Paris runways during Men’s Fashion Week.  Designers, including Number (N)ine, Comme des Garçons, Yohji Yamamoto, Jean-Paul Gaultier and Rick Owens- all had fellas strutting their stuff in skirts.  What no minis?  On second thought, I don’t want to see that either. Silly Monkey…

Someone reportedly paid $2,025 on eBay for a pair of Naughty Monkey shoes that Sara Palin wore during her campaign for Vice President.  The shoes that regularly retail for $100 were sold by a person who identified herself as Palin’s niece.  As a bonus- the Alaskan Governor is supposed to sign the shoes too.  [the cut]

I did a little searching and found the exact same pair on Endless.com marked down to $86.90.  I mean if you want to be a Naughty Monkey, why not go for a pair of shoes like these?

I “Double Dare” you…

Check out more about Governor Palin on the cut, where they also report her $180k wardrobe has been stuffed away in garbage bags.

Forgive Me For Finding Humor In the Following Statement…

I was just reviewing a long list of press releases and this one struck me as funny: “L.L. Bean Recalls Ice Cleats Used During Winter Weather Due to Fall Hazard”  [PR Newswire]  Man that sucks.

This One’s Not So Funny…

Vermont Teddy Bear’s Limited-Edition prnphotos078474-THE-VERMONT-TEDDY-B ‘Recession-Proof Love’ Bear Brings a Bit of Humor to this ‘Bear Market’ “  [PR Newswire]

There’s nothing humorous about losing 40% of your 401k’s value.  Nor would I want a broke bear to remind me of it.

Support Your "Mo Bro" this Movember

 flight_conchords_article2

If one of your male friends has suddenly sprouted a handle bar moustache, he may be participating in Movember 2008.

A world wide event started in Australia, Movember is an annual charity event to support men’s health issues.

In the United States, proceeds go to the Prostate Cancer Foundation.

Palmercash_1_LRG

Here’s how it works:

“At the start of Movember guys register with a clean shaven  face. The Movember participants, known as Mo Bros, then have the remainder of the month to grow and groom their Mo (Australian slang for moustache), raising money and awareness along the way for men’s health and the fight against prostate cancer.

Movember culminates at the end of the month at the Gala Partés. These glamorous and groomed events will see Tom Selleck, Hulk Hogan and Borat look-a-likes battle it out for their chance to take home the prestigious Man of Movember title.”

It’s not just all about the men, ladies can support their Bro’s by becoming a Mo Sista.  Click here to find out how you can do your part.

Did I mention you can win prizes?  Click here for the categories ranging from International Man of Movember to best dressed Mo Sista.

Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2009- Day One

One of two fashion extravaganzas taking place in India, Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week displayed an impressive array of collections incorporating influences from Europe to traditional India.

My favorite collection by Gauri & Nainika Karan originally presented their first line in January 2002 in New Delhi.  Known to favor art, theater, Hollywood red carpet and  European inspired designs, the female duo’s feminine and romantic confections are extraordinarily appealing to this western woman’s eye.

Their show this week ranged from creamy flesh tones to brilliant jewel hues and a fabric assembly of chiffons, georgette’s and crepes.

An example of Gauri & Nainika Karan’s influence of European fashion history, this Victorian inspired dress above, is modern and beautiful .

Bruno Takes On Milan Fashion Week

bruno

Friday, “Bruno” aka Sacha Baron Cohen terrorized Milan Fashion Week with backstage pranks and a trip down the runway.

Currently filming, Bruno: Delicious Journeys Through America for the Purpose of Making Heterosexual Male, Bruno, along with his camera crew, created a different sort of excitement backstage at the Iceberg, Mariella Burani and Roberto Musso shows.

Mr. Cohen’s fashion diva alter ego Bruno, reportedly threw himself about on the floor and into racks of clothes in what seemed to be a self imposed fashion crisis, while also pretending to tear off his clothes.

Unrecognizable at first, Cohen wore a prosthetic nose and blond wig.  But it wasn’t long before the ruse was up and an unamused Italian Chamber of Fashion sent out memos barring Cohen and the several production company names he was suspected to be associated with, from Milan’s fashion shows.

But nothing stops Bruno….

Fashion Sensei Scoop! Interview With Project Runway’s Joe Faris

Joe

This morning I had the privilege to interview Metro Detroit’s own, designer Joe Faris.  The latest contestant to be bid Auf Wiedersehen by Project Runway, we chatted about his experience on the show, Project Runway’s influence, Bryant Park and his upcoming collection.

After being away from his family for 6 weeks, Joe didn’t have to wait long for the first episode of Project Runway to air; just 10 days. I asked him what it was like to watch that first show at home.   “Surreal” he replied. “It’s similar to when you hear your voice on an answering machine.  You know what your voice sounds like in your head, but until you hear the recording, you don’t know what everyone else hears.”

So were there any surprises when Joe saw himself on television for the first time?

“Yes, my nose.”  Your nose?  “Yes, it was BIG.”

Joe has an excellent sense of humor.  I prefer to live in denial of what I would look like on camera.  I couldn’t bear to see myself another, 10 pounds heaver.

Prior to the show airing, Joe commented that he might only watch the first episode.  I was curious to know if he watched all the episodes and if there was anything said behind the scenes that may have bothered him.

Overall, he was pretty happy with the way he was portrayed.  Some other unnamed contestants felt that they were “edited”, but his philosophy was if you said it, you said it.  There’s no editing words into your mouth.

He did however, find Leanne’s comment “Why is Joe still here?” a little surprising because he felt that they were on friendly terms.

Speaking of editing, I asked Joe if he had any funny stories about his time on Project Runway.  There seemed to be nothing more that the banter that we saw on the show, with the occasional teasing or jabs.  He did say though, that there was certainly enough filmed material to put out what he called  “box set” of extras.  That could be interesting…

I was curious to know what sort of opinions Joe’s friends and family had when they watched the show with him.  Several people told him that he should have won and that he did a great job.  Others, didn’t hold any punches.  Those folks pointed out where he may have made mistakes or what he should have done for better results.  He said that he didn’t get much positive feedback when it came to the last challenge.

Viewers may be wondering why he struggled a little when it came to draping and sewing.  After all, he did go to school at Parsons right?

Well, on a typical day, Joe uses a computer to create his designs, rather than a form.  Re-discovering those those skills proved to be a bit of a challenge.

One of my favorite episodes was “What’s Your Sign” where contestants created a design based on either their astrological sign or their former contestant partner.

Remember my favorite Michael Kors “Pooping Fabric” comment?

During this challenge, contestants had the opportunity to meet with Heidi’s “favorite” NYC designers.  During the four hours that the contestants met with prior Project Runway favorites, Joe seemed to connect with fellow Michigander Daniel Vosovic and Kara Janx.  When asked about the others, Joe said he couldn’t believe how vulgar Jaye was.  He wouldn’t be specific, but it seemed to make a lasting impression.  And Christian was, well… Christian.

joe_final_23Moving on to Bryant Park, those of us who followed New York’s Fashion Week two weeks ago, discovered that six contestants were chosen to show their stuff at the famous venue.  I asked Joe what it was like being apart of such a coveted experience.  He told me that he was home for 10 days and then he was called back to the show to spend another 4 weeks working on his Fashion Week collection. “It was everything you would think it was. I was incredibly happy.  That’s the prize.”

But what about that moment when you are standing on the runway, ready to introduce your collection?  “It was nerve wracking.”  He told me that he asked the producers “what do people say?”  At which point the producers reassured him to speak from the heart.

Joe described his collection as representing “America, multi-cultural, motor cycle, and Rock & Roll”.

When speaking about his collection, Joe felt less pressure in his position (he knew he was already eliminated) to design for the judges.  Had he been in the top three, he felt that he would have focused more on evening wear rather than leather.

Joe currently works as Senior Designer at Schott NYC and has worked with companies like Inkslingers where there has been a heavy focus on jeans, t-shirts and leather.  I wanted to know, after competing in Project Runway, did he think that it may have a new influence on his work?

“Yes” was his answer.  He customarily does not design dresses which have the need for draping.  So, Project Runway sparked that interest somewhat.

While working on a collection for Schott NYC, he is also developing his own collection of approximately 20 pieces.  When speaking about dresses, he felt comfort was key, “it should feel good, like a great pair of jeans.”

Well, I could sure use that.

The collection is due to launch in January.

Japan FW TYO Spring/Summer 2009: Day 2

Day Two at Japan’s Fashion Week brings strong shoulders, more “ice cream cone” pants, HISUI seems to have a bone to pick with us, doll clothes, Cousin IT wigs, more ruffs and some ass kicking 80′s.

First up are the decidedly strong shoulders from designer Akira Naka.  For women who have the weight of the world to balance, this collection calls to mind a certain eighties business suit jacket look.

Of all of Tuesday’s collections available for review, I would have to say that support surface was my favorite.  We have fall 2008′s “it” pants back for an encore and a really lovely modern interpretation of the bold shoulder.  I would feel much more comfortable wearing this sort of shape than a set of linebacker shoulder pads as seen in the above collection from AKIRA NAKA.  One thing is for sure, invest in a great pair of oxford shoes!

Like mintdesigns yesterday, HISUI seems to have been inspired by skeletal features.  Is it a commentary on the pressure to be thin?  I’m not really sure, but the first dress in this collection also brings a fish like skeleton to mind.

Oh Né-net, what can I say?  All I could think of was what would Michael Kors say if this came down the runway for him to judge?  Look number two looks like a modern day Depression Era costume (hmm, intentional?) and just in case we didn’t get it, Raggedy Ann and Andy are holding effigies of themselves.

Aguri Sagimori had some very interesting uses of the ruffle, which seems to be a popular trend.  I especially liked the white blouse below with the tuxedo-like tail.  That sort of tail was very popular in the mid to late eighties.

Japan FW TYO Spring/Summer 2009

The home of trend setting fashion, Tokyo Fashion Week hit the runways yesterday.  The exciting spring/summer 2009 collections are rolling out this week in Japan and judging by the photos taken yesterday, Japan’s best designers are sure not to disappoint.

Designers Hokuto Katsui and Nao Yagi from mintdesigns, embodied the spirit of spring with a runway lined with umbrellas while models wore creative interpretations of the spring staple; the raincoat.  Instead of the traditional rain hat, the ladies were topped with a curious choice of animal bones.  One thing that was consistently cute, were the fantastic rain boots.  Not too high and well paired with a pair of striped socks.

I have to say that my favorite from Takumi Hatakeyama’s collection is the burnt orange bell sleeve dress.  The shape of the sleeves and cut of this dress makes this creation so wearable and chic!

After not appearing in at Tokyo’s Fall Fashion Week, I was so exited to see mercibeaucoup in this spring’s lineup.  I always love the creative spirit conveyed in Eri Utsugi’s designs her fantastic use of color.  If only I could get away with wearing that adorable striped stocking confection or those fantastic tights with the little balls on them.  Alas, this old broad would look a wee bit silly.  One other thing to note, it appears that the maxi dress will still have it’s place in next spring’s wardrobe.  So, don’t cast yours aside yet.

This collection by Motonari Ono recalls a strong influence from Queen Elizabeth’s reign with the high ruffs, rich embroidery, and the modern interpretation of “trunk hose” once worn by men.  I think it’s just beautiful.

Designer Ritsuko Shirahama appears to be enamored with the bombasted hose as well, as seen below in green.  The three tiered skirt is also quite lovely, but may not be that easy to walk in.  I would also be remiss in not mentioning the eighties inspired high and side ponytail.  If you are old enough to have worn this once, be well advised to keep your pony rear-facing.

Visual DNA

RESIZE_374988A9

A friend of mine sent me this link for an interactive test to discover your Visual DNA.  You are taken through a series of pictures where you are asked to click on the photo that most appeals to you in that category.

At the end of the visual questionnaire, you will have a profile that describes your visual personality.

I took a test like this once at the Chicago Museum of Contemporary Art.  It was set up during a big social function for people to determine their dating personality.  The funny thing is, at the end of the test, you were assigned a color and a corresponding “match” color.  The idea was for everyone to wear their sticker and you would then be better able to identify your perfect mate.

On a recent trip to the library, I was reviewing the New York Times Best Seller List, in hopes of finding an interesting new read.  I was immediately drawn to Are You There, Vodka? It’s Me, Chelsea by Chelsea Handler.  Mainly because it was a take on my all time favorite book from adolescence, Are You There, God? It’s Me, Margaret. by Judy Blume

I certainly wasn’t disappointed by this hysterically absurd memoir written by comedian Chelsea Handler.  My only disappointment, was not skipping my girls night out two weeks ago, and driving the 10 miles to Barnes and Nobel to meet her when she was in town.

Be aware though, she is very irreverent.  There were a few topics that I was a little bummed that she poked fun at, but I think that’s her shtick.

Irresponsible and Disturbing

anorexic2pl

MTV has initiated a casting call for young women from 17 and 24, five foot nine and six feet tall, and between 130 and 190 pounds to be a part of their new reality show Model Maker.

Here is an excerpt from their press release:

“Women come in all shapes and sizes, but models don’t. The term model conjures an image of stick-thin, towering beauties oozing confidence, glamour, poise and sexuality from every pore. “Skinny,” “no body fat,” and “size zero” are the words and phrases associated with models. “Chubby,” “well-fed,” and “big- boned” are not.”

It goes on to say, “With weekly eliminations looming, models must put their best foot forward at all times while staying focused on losing weight.”

The winner will receive $100,000, a modeling portfolio, a personal trainer for a year and “the chance to jumpstart the career of your dreams.”

Can you say disgusting?!

From Buns to Bust

big_butt_women

Have you ever dreamed of transplanting the extra junk in your trunk to your bust?  According to a recent report in the WSJ, the option may be on it’s way to the U.S.

A procedure that couples a person’s own fat cells with stem cells is already being administered in Japan and Europe and may be a better alternative to saline and silicone.

With recent news from Christina Applegate’s courageous battle with breast cancer, and her subsequent election to have a double mastectomy, using the patients own fat cells, may be a welcome option for breast cancer survivors.

All I have to say is, I am more than willing to donate some of my belly fat to science.

InStyle- New Style Rules

I keep hearing that there aren’t any “rules” when it comes to fashion by various writers.  So it piqued my interest when I received an e-mail from InStyle Magazine, sharing the “New Style Rules” for fall.

After reading their “Rules”, I decided to review them here on Fashion Sensei with my own viewpoints.  I welcome your comments and impressions on my opinion and InStyle’s.

Let Your Roots Show

072208_unrule01_400X400 400_madonna_080213_et_mkappeler_afp_79739251

InStyle encourages us to leave about one inch of our natural color, but with this caveat, they must be within a few shade of the dyed hue.  So no sporting black roots with blond hair.  That just looks a little too trashy.  Follow gal pals and trend setters, Madge and Gwyneth Paltrow instead.

Stay in Sandals

072208_unrule16_200X400

As with last year, it is still acceptable to wear open toe shoes and even sandals with opaque tights.

I agree with this with one monition. If you live in a warmer climate in the winter months, you can sport this look all season long.  However, if you live in a cooler climate like Michigan, tuck away those sandals and open toe darlings until the thaw sets in.

There is nothing sillier than salt stains on the tips of your tights.  This may be common sense for some, but inevitably I see some young fashionista making the aforementioned faux pas.

Grow Out Your Hair At 40

072208_unrule05b_400X400

I advised this suggestion in Fashion Lesson #16  Forty and Fabulous.  I do not see any reason why a woman who takes good care of herself should limit herself to short tresses.  I will reiterate that if you have long hair at this age, keep your cut and color maintained and try to avoid the “frosted” or over highlighted look as you start to gray.  Your stylist can assist you in maintaining a natural look.

One other tip,  bring in a picture of yourself as a child to illustrate your natural color.  It may have been decades since you have seen your original foundation, and a youthful picture can help in reduce the signs of aging.

Go Sleeveless

072208_unrule04_200X400

Ok, first lets look at InStyle’s poster girl Sara Jessica Parker.  If you have arms like SJP, then I say go for it.  But if you tend to have overly skinny, jiggly or heavy arms, ignore this style rule.  You can modify this rule with short sleeves that flatter your individual physique.

Don’t Match Your Stocking To Your Shoes

072208_unrule21_300X400

I consider this to be quite a precarious rule and to be followed with extreme caution.  It is very easy to look like a mismatched clown.

I highly advise that the multi-colored look be left to ladies under 25.  Also, skip the crazy blue raccoon eyes.  Enjoy Fall’s gem tones in moderation.

Pick A Print That Makes You Look Slimmer

072208_unrule08_400X400

I love this tip!  With all the patterned blouses and dresses to choose from, this is an easy rule to follow.  Look for patterns that enhance your figure such as contrasting panels or prints that slim your waist and ruffles that add proportion.

Let Your Brows Grow Natural

072208_unrule13_400X400

Gone are the days when overly arched, drawn in eyebrows are acceptable.  When going for this look, be sure to only allow enough growth that your features can handle.

Consider Brooke Shields, she is a tall woman with very strong features.  She has a face that can handle such dominant brows.

Conversely, if you are petite and have fine features, work with your anesthetist to see how full of a brow your face can manage without looking too masculine.

This doesn’t mean that you should just let them grow wild.  Be sure to keep your brows neat and shaped if you are doing this on your own.

Swap Your Skinny Jeans For Pleated Trousers

072208_unrule06_200X400

This look has been captured in countless shots by the Sartorialist this past fall.  It also dominated the runway this past winter during fall Fashion Week.

Here, you see Naomi Campbell donning the cropped pleated trousers.  InStyle claims that these pants have a lower waist, but I’m not seeing it.

These pants are meant for skinny girls only.  Anything over size 4 or 6, may want to reconsider.  They are just not flattering for the masses.

Wear Horizontal Stripes On Top

072208_unrule12_200X400

When I see Mariah Carey as the poster girl for any trend, I run away screaming.  Come on, look at this picture of her!  She’s not even wearing pants.

On the positive side, if you are a slim curvy girl, you can get away with this look.  Just please lower the hem of your dress or put on some pants.

Fashion Of Olympic Proportion

If you had the opportunity to view the opening ceremonies at the Beijing Olympics, I’m sure you shared my sense of awe and appreciation of this mesmerizing production.  I was dazzled by the electrifying color and the sensational movement the costumes contributed to this monumental production covering 5,000 years of Chinese history.

First up, is the graceful dancer pictured below in her brilliant costume, supported by countless men in an effort to symbolize the notion that one person cannot achieve greatness with out the support of many.

In the next series of pictures, one may conclude that exquisite traditional dress was not limited to the female contingent of performers.  Here, you see a series of remarkably handsome ombre costumes and their respective movement. (*Note- Are those sneakers I see under their costumes?) :D

In another example of the many creating the One, these green costumes embellished with brilliant lights, moved with awe inspiring precision to create the below dove.  One interesting aside, famed Chinese film maker Zhang Yimou, originally chose black for the performers and at the last minute decided on the green.

Finally, after many segments involving solely men, the ladies had their turn to shine in these gowns which seem to have a little western Colonial influence with the hoop skirt.
