What I Did This Summer: Birmingham Magazine Fall Photo Feature

Hi everyone, I have to start off by apologizing for the lack of posts lately.  I have been busy for the past few weeks working on a couple of writing and styling projects and I hope to get back on track with regular posts again soon.

Today I thought I would share with you the photos that I styled for the Birmingham Magazine’s fall feature.

We shot this at the end of July in a vacant store front in downtown Birmingham.  John Roe was the talented photographer, Jennifer Arnone the exceptional Art Director along Jennie Petrovic and Colleen Dwyer from 6 Birmingham Salon.  I also was very fortunate to have the help of Jenan Saab as my assistant.

Watch Out Male Models, There’s a New Coverboy in Town

In quite possibly his first fashion magazine cover and full fashion spread, faux Austrian fashion reporter Bruno, a.k.a. Sacha Baron Cohen, shows off his mad modeling skills in July’s UK edition of Marie Claire.

20090603_brunocover_250x355                                               Photo: MarieClaire.co.uk, thecut

After distancing themselves first, Marie Claire reveals Bruno’s A-Z commentary on fashion:

H is for "High-vaisted Jeans", the fashionista said, explaining: "In terms of human tragedy on a mass scale, vy are zese not getting the attention zat Hurricane Katrina did?"

S is for "September 11th 2001": "Famous, of course, for being ze day on vich Oscar de la Renta reintroduced ze chambray peasant blouse."   [Telegraph]

You may remember in a previous post, Bruno crashed Milan Fashion Week by walking the runway in a velcro suit and was then later banned from returning to any other events.

Last week, the WSJ speculated “How does a major Hollywood studio promote a movie so raunchy and offensive that it initially got an NC-17 rating? By staying under the radar.”

After Sunday’s stunt at the MTV Awards where Bruno flew from the rafters in a winged thong, only to land facedown in the lap of rapper Eminem (who is also promoting a new album) and was face to face with the comedians bare buns; I’m not sure that Bruno is trying to stay under the radar.

Now today it was reported, that he is being sued by a woman involved in a bingo melee that left her in a wheelchair two years ago while filming the movie.

It will certainly be interesting to see the forthcoming stunts leading up to the July 10 release of the movie.

Until then, pick up an issue of Marie Claire to see what he had to say about Vogue editor Anna Wintour, Madonna and model Naomi Campbell.

Birmingham Magazine

Hi guys, awhile ago I mentioned that I had the opportunity to do some styling work for a local magazine here in Michigan.  Doing a photo shoot is a lot of work, but incredibly enjoyable.  Imagine how fun it would be to go to some of the best boutiques in the state and have your pick of the store.  At one boutique alone, I borrowed approximately $7,000 worth of merchandise.  If only it was mine to keep…

Birmingham Mag 6.09

The topic of my assignment was to style a summer swimsuit page.  I started with this beautiful teal colored asymmetrical bikini and was thrilled after shopping several stores, to finally find the perfect dress to be worn as a beach cover up.  What’s striking about the dress, is the flexibility in dressing it up or down; you could go straight from the pool to a nice restaurant without feeling self-conscious at all.

You may not be able to see the type, but the silver sandals are Valentino and they were amazing.  Too bad this stylist doesn’t have the budget to pay the $675 to buy them…

Here is an alternate page that I styled for the magazine.  This pool side look includes a bikini that will definitely draw a second look with it’s trendy animal print and bold jeweled embellishments.

I was absolutely over-the-moon for these Lanvin sandals; falling in love with the pink bow.  I think these sandals may be a Tender (the name of the boutique) exclusive.  I looked everywhere online and could not find the exact same pair.  The price on these covetable catwalkers you ask?  $995.

Thanks guys for letting me share!

Were The 2009 Collections More Diverse At NYFW?

84798016_10.preview

Check out the statistics put together by the blog Jezebel on the diversity quotient for the NYFW runway models.  You may also be interested to know which designers did not cast one model of color–the results may surprise you.

What?!

Speaking of surprises, according to the Cut, rapper, former back up dancer and Britney’s babies daddy—Kevin Federline is said to be developing a line of children’s clothing.

“It’s a really tough business, I’m trying to take it seriously and make a quality product for kids but not have parents pay like $500 or something ridiculous for a pair of jeans," he told WWD.

I’ll let you leave your own punch line in the comments section below…

This Girl REALLY Need Help…

Folks are gasping at the site of Lindsay Lohan these days and not because of her substance abuse.  It seems that LiLo has a serious weight issue going on.  The two photos on the left are from May and June 2008 respectively and the last is her most recent photo–taken this month.

According to a story on Feb. 16th in the Huffington Post, Lohan was asked by US Weekly at NYFW about her weight loss and she said that it was “unintentional”

"I eat. I had my Big Mac yesterday from McDonald’s," she told Us Sunday at the Matthew Williamson NYC store opening. "I eat just as much as I always have."

The 22-year-old actress (who has raised eyebrows before for her skinny frame) said she thinks she has just been "working a lot." She said she also blames "stress … and lack of sleep when I travel."

Honestly, PLEASE eat a few of those Big Mac’s more often, you look unwell.

More Funny Fashion…

Do you remember the Pac Man themed fashions I posted on Halloween last year?  Well Giles Deacon didn’t disappoint during London Fashion Week with this zip-up party hat and the herculean proportions on the cropped jacket below.

While I’m at it, here’s a few doozies that are worth noting from NYFW.  Starting with these remarkably phallic ensembles.

Confessions Of A Shopaholic

Tuesday evening I went to a pre-screening of the movie “Confessions Of A Shopaholic” with Isla Fisher.  It was sort of a last minuteconfessions-of-a-shopaholic-01-thumb thing.  I entered my name a couple of weeks ago for tickets and found out the morning of the screening that I won a pair.

While waiting in line at the theater, I couldn’t help but notice certain women who were wearing boas with silly hats and a woman who had shopping bags tied to her clothes.

I discovered later that printed on the bottom of the preview passes (which I didn’t receive until just before entering the show), viewers who dressed like shopaholics had the opportunity to win 1 of 50 Confessions of A Shopaholic gift bags.   In front of the theater, we were presented with a red carpet to walk down while judges decided if you looked shopaholic enough for a gift bag.

There was also a photographer taking pictures of movie viewers in front of a screen-celebrity style- for a new local fashion magazine called StyleLine.

It certainly created a bit of a buzz before going into the movie and I couldn’t help but think about the unmistakeable timing of a movie about fashion set to open the same day as New York Fashion Week.

Confessions Of A Shopaholic-Fluffy But Cute

The movie is about a recent college graduate played by Borat’s baby mama, Isla (pronounced I-la) Fisher whose dream it is to work at a Vogue-like magazine in NYC.

After missing her opportunity to interview at the magazine, she settles for a job writing a financial column using the pen name “The Girl With A Green Scarf” at a financial magazine in an improbable twist of circumstances.

Isla’s character-Rebecca Bloomwood, becomes a star reporter who has a knack for explaining financial concepts in terms that the masses can understand.  The blatant irony is that Rebecca is dolling out financial advice to others while she herself, is over her head in credit card bills.  While working at the magazine, she predictably falls in love with her boss, played by the handsome Hugh Dancy.

Ultimately, her little white lies begin to unravel, and she is forced to come to terms with the consequences.

While I thought that the movie was cute and enjoyable to watch, I had to consider it’s PG rating and think of the movie as not one that was geared to win the hearts of Sex And The City fans, but one that a mother could enjoy with her teen daughter.

If you are viewing this with your kids, I would give this movie a B.  However, if you were thinking about going to see the movie with your girlfriends, I would wait until this one comes out on cable before I spent the $10 at the movie theater.

Shopping & Facebook Confessions

If you are interested in the clothes that Rebecca wears in the movie, I discovered that Blue Fly has partnered with the film as the official shopping site to get Confessions Of A Shopaholic inspired clothes.  Click on this link to hear Pat Field talk about her costume designs for Rebecca, see the trailer and even get a Confessions Facebook application.

Fashion Sensei Scoop! Interview With Millionaire Matchmaker Patti Stanger

NUP_132347_1383

She’s back!  Tonight is the premiere of The Millionaire Matchmaker’s second season.  I had the chance to chat with the show’s star, Patti Stanger on Tuesday and ask her about the new season, her take on style and her fascinating background-and boy did she dish!

For those of you who missed last season, let me give you a quick synopsis of what The Millionaire Matchmaker is about.  The show follows Patti Stanger who owns The Millionaire’s Club, a matchmaking service for wealthy men who are looking for a serious relationship with a beautiful and intelligent women.  Women are first pre-screened by the discerning Ms. Stanger and her staff.  Once vetted, she may then may join the club for free and have a shot at meeting the man of her dreams.

Last season, I was a little skeptical of the idea and assumed it was a group of gold digging, bubble headed bleach blonds and strippers who were looking for their sugar daddy.

It’s really the opposite, Patti and her staff do some serious evaluations before a woman is welcomed into the Millionaire’s Club.  While screening, Patti is looking for the sort of women that is looking for a traditional lifestyle-where the prospective wife or girlfriend would stay home and raise a family while her husband pursues his career.

Another example of Patti’s traditional values in dating is the implementation of her 10 Commandments for her bachelors; which includes a no sex until they are in a committed relationship commandment.

This Season, Equal Opportunity Matchmaking

In season two, not only will there be men looking for the perfect woman, but Patti will be setting up three high powered female millionaires and some gay men too.  Here’s a sneak peak at two of her lady millionaires.83487

Heidi Cornell the creator of Young, Fabulous & Broke and a single mother, has solicited Patti’s help in helping her find the perfect guy.  Patti encourages us to keep an eye on Heidi’s story in particular, because there is a big twist leaving viewers wondering which man she will choose.

Shauna Raisch of Split Ends and the owner of Twiggs salonspa in Minnesota, is leaving her shop and moving to LA to find her own little Ashten Kucher.  Shauna has a reputation of being a diva and I got the impression from Patti that her expectations were a little unrealistic.  We’ll see what happens…

Patti On Style

When I wrote about The Millionaire Matchmaker last season, I can’t tell you how many people landed on my site by Googling  “what does Patti Stanger wear” or words to those effect.  I also had folks e-mail me asking if I knew where she shopped.patti red

So I asked Patti about her style and what her influences were.  Patti told me that her mother was a true fashionista when she was growing up and she learned early during her days working at Saks Fifth Avenue at Christmas, to save her money and buy the best that she could afford when it came to staples and shoes.  She is a big fan of Gucci and Chanel shoes, Black Halo dresses-which she says “sucks you in” all the right places, and Nanette Lepore (one of my favorites too).

But lest you think she spends her days shopping like a diva on Rodeo Drive, Patti confessed that she loves online shopping, especially edressme.com.  She’s also a devotee of Loemans and Forever 21, “I love their jewelry!” she says .

“A Player Will Give You The Best Advice- He Know What Makes The Flagpole Raise.”

Last Season during one vetting session with potential mates for the millionaires, Patti told one of the ladies that she looked like she was ready to wrap herself around a pole.  So I asked the 47 year old matchmaker for her best advice for women over 35 who wanted to look sexy without appearing desperate.  Here’s her advice:

  • The key to looking sexy, is to show off your assets.  If you have great legs show them off.  If you have fat ankles, cover them up.  The best way to do that is with boots that have a 3 inch heel.
  • Go for a sexy secretary look with a fitted blouse and a pencil skirt along with high black heels.  To take it from day to night, wear a brooch at your décolleté.
  • When wearing skirts, keep them at 1 inch above the knee.
  • Shapewear, Shapewear, Shapewear!  I hate Spanx, they ride up.  My favorite brands are Body Wrap and Sassybax, especially the one piece.  I also love shape fx at Spiegel, it has shapewear in the dresses.

In her new book, “Become Your Own Matchmaker: 8 Easy Steps for Attracting Your Perfect Mate”, Patti who is known not to mince words, advises women over 40 not to go shopping with their girlfriends.  “They won’t tell you the truth!  Neither will your gay boyfriend.” she says.  Instead, she advises, “Take a player.  A player will give you the best advice- he knows what makes the flagpole raise!”

Advice For Gay Men

Patti also has fashion advice for gay men, “People always think just because you are gay, that you have taste.  It’s not true. Queens attract queens.  If you are a queen and you want a butch guy, you need to dress like a lumberjack.”

5 Random Facts About Patti Stanger

If you have a Facebook page, then by now you have be tagged to respond to 25 Random Things about yourself.  I asked Patti if she would give me 5.

1.) She was a practicing astrologer.

2.) She worked as a psychic and director for Kenny Kingston Psychic Hotline.  She says she gets premonitions all the time, even about celebrities.

3.) If she weren’t a matchmaker, she would be a professional chef.

4.) She is currently writing a screenplay based on her new book.

5.) While she was going to the University of Miami, she sold jewelry that she made and designed, along with hand painted T-shirts.  But her best sellers where her erotic candies that she sold from door-to-door.

2 Words To Describe Patti

In preparation for my interview with Patti, I watched several videos from last season where Patti talks about each of her clients and at the end she describes the man with two words.  I thought it would be interesting to hear which two words she would use in reference to herself.

Energetic was the first and based on the pace of our interview, and how fast she talked, in addition to how warm and upbeat she is, I would totally agree.

The other word she used to describe herself was insane.  Not because she is crazy, she is a very sharp woman.  But with a book, a business and a hit television show on her hands who wouldn’t be?

Don’t forget to check out The Millionaire Matchmaker tonight on Bravo at 9pm/10c.
