“AVEDON Fashion Photographs 1944-2000” Comes to the DIA

Delight In the Brilliant Fashion Photography by Richard Avedon Spanning Nearly Six Decades, but Just Don’t Do the Cha-Cha

I felt anxious with anticipation as I purchased my tickets to see Richard Avedon’s fashion photography exhibit, (running now until January 17) at the Detroit Institute of Arts last weekend. As I made my way through the museum, I thumbed through the Visitor Map and Information Guide to the DIA. In the back of the guide, I noticed with amusement the following quote under Museum Etiquette: “Please do not run, skip, hop, jump, slide, tumble or cha-cha in the museum galleries and halls. Walking is our preferred method of movement in the building.” Apparently, strolling is also allowable.

Upon entering the gallery, I learned Richard Avedon started his career in photography at the age of 21 under the mentorship of Alexey Brodovitch, the talented art director of Harper’s Bazaar. Avedon went on to become one of the most influential photographers ever.  Some of his influential methods include: his pioneering use of movement, the juxtaposition of his subjects, his ability to create a story behind the still image, his diverse use of models and his exploration beyond conventional beauty.Sunny with credits

Avedon’s fashion images move beyond basic catalogue photos of women wearing beautiful gowns and instead, take us on a voyeuristic trip witnessing an evening of fashionable society. Each still frame elicits a story as with model  Sunny Harnett, seen above leaning seductively over the roulette table, cigarette in hand, at a casino table in Le Touquet, France in August 1954.

In another image from this group, figures of varying ages surround the model and one can’t help but notice the juxtaposition of her youth in comparison to the aged countenance of a neighboring female gambler. You are left wondering who these characters are and longing for more. The series moves her from the casino on to the theater, then exiting from a car and finally ending her evening at the doorway of a posh hotel.  Avedon is not only the photographer behind the beautiful clothes in each of these pictures, he has been described as a skilled director, guiding the models much like actors, drawing out a broad range of emotion.

He is also famous for the sense of veruschka Kimberly credits movement in his photography. Models are seen stretching every limb, jumping from curbs, leaping into the air–sometimes jumping himself to get an interesting shot—gracefully bringing his images to life. Fashion photographer’s today use many of the techniques he employed (see my post What I Did This Summer for a modern example.)

Donyale with CreditsWhile moving through the gallery, I was struck by his daring use of multi-cultural models. Avedon used  African American models such as native Detroiter Donyale Luna. As well as China Machado–a woman of both Portuguese and Chinese heritage—during a time when the standard of beauty demanded fair Caucasian skin.

Once when Avedon was pressured to refrain from using China Machado  in a Harper’s Bazaar layout, (Hearst publications had a strict protocol to exclude “ethnic looking” models) the photographer threatened to quit. The magazine was forced to relent.

One thing is clear—Avedon’s work is eternal. Throughout the exhibit, I couldn’t help but feel the work that he created is so timeless that if I saw them in next month’s Vogue, I would believe they were recently taken.China with credits

After leaving the exhibit, I stopped by the theater across the hall for the 90-minute documentary, “American Masters: Richard Avedon, Darkness & Light.” The incredible PBS film runs in a continuous loop while the exhibit is open, taking you deeper into the mind of Richard Avedon and his mesmerizing work in not only fashion, but portraiture as well. I highly recommend it—just don’t let the docent catch you doing the cha-cha on your way out.

For more information on the exhibit or to buy tickets, go to DIA.org

A special thank you to The Richard Avedon Foundation for the use of the images in this post.

Louis Vuitton Sells Scraps As Art?

Photo: STEFANO PALTERA, FOR THE LA TIMES

Louis Vuitton is in some hot water with a man who purchased $12,000 worth of what he thought was limited edition art, two years ago by artist Takashi Murakami.  It turns out, that the prints were merely scraps of leather mounted as art.  Now he is suing LV which could possibly cost the company 12 million dollars.  Read more at latimes.com.

Happy Friday!

It’s been some week here in the Sensei household, I was sick,  then my oldest was sick, followed by my youngest who spent the past two nights throwing up…  I need to find the number to call in for a mom’s personal day.  If anyone knows it, let me know! :)

That’s A’lotta Bananas!

Yesterday I went to Banana Republic to redeem a $50 customerbr627649-01viv01 appreciation card that my husband so graciously gave me.  It’s a long story how he got the card, but the long and short of it is, B.R. couldn’t find a pair of pants that they tailored for him for several weeks, so they gave him the card.

Anyway, I can’t believe how low some things are marked down.  I purchased $339.20 worth of merchandise for only $79.15.  When you take off the $50 discount card, my total bill was $30.17!

My best deals were a pair of jeans for $14, reg. $89 and a black sweater from the fall collection for $9.74, reg $79. I almost felt a little guilty…but then I came to my senses! :)

Banana Republic is having an extra 25% off today online if you want to get in on the sale, but there was a much better selection at my local store.

So let’s talk about Michelle Obama.  Beautiful at the inaugural address in Isabel Toledo, stunning in Jason Wu at the inaugural balls- but what I want to talk about is the amazing dress she wore to the National Prayer Service on Wed.  I did some hunting and it turns out that the 50′s style dress with an Asian inspired print, was designed by ex-surfer Tracy Feith.  The first lady  bought the dress at the ultra chic boutique Ikram, in Chicago.  No doubt that if there are any of these $720 dresses around, they have been snatched up by now.

There is some good news for those of us who do not have the budget to buy a $720 dress, Feith has been tapped by Target to design a collection for their GO International line and will make it’s way to the stores on May 17th.

Now That’s Hot!

Brrr!
Warm

The temperature here in MI is supposed to take another dip tomorrow, so if you see me walking around in one of these, don’t be alarmed.  At first I thought these were some kind of new snow suit.  Turns out, they are sleeping bags by Lippi Selk Bag

From Fashion And Back

January 22nd kicked off the exhibition of British designer Hussein Chalayan at London’s Design Museum.  The exhibition will include a retrospective of his experimental and conceptual designs spanning the past 15 years.

His collections are not only art, but encompass technology, philosophy, anthropology and much, much more.  The video above includes a moment where a model literally steps into a table and walks off with a skirt; a crystal and LED lit dress; and magical dresses that literally transform before your eyes.

If you are in the area, this is a must see. If not, here are some links that you can experience some of the incredible and inspiring moments from his collections and learn more about this exceptional art and fashion visionary.  First, a sneak peak of the exhibition from Telegraph.co.uk,  a video retrospective of his work from style.com, an article from Telegraph.co.uk revealing more about the artist/designer and finally a link to YouTube for a collection of videos from his runway shows.

That’s it for today guys, have a great weekend!

Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2009- Day One

One of two fashion extravaganzas taking place in India, Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week displayed an impressive array of collections incorporating influences from Europe to traditional India.

My favorite collection by Gauri & Nainika Karan originally presented their first line in January 2002 in New Delhi.  Known to favor art, theater, Hollywood red carpet and  European inspired designs, the female duo’s feminine and romantic confections are extraordinarily appealing to this western woman’s eye.

Their show this week ranged from creamy flesh tones to brilliant jewel hues and a fabric assembly of chiffons, georgette’s and crepes.

An example of Gauri & Nainika Karan’s influence of European fashion history, this Victorian inspired dress above, is modern and beautiful .

Ebony Fashion Fair

Layout 1

The Runway Report: What’s Hip. What’s Hot. What’s Now! is the theme for this 51st year of the Ebony Fashion Fair.  If you’re unfamiliar with this production, it’s not your typical fashion show.

Part runway, part Broadway show, Ebony Fashion Fair showcases designs by Christian Lacroix, Sarli, b. michael, Carolina Herrera, Ruben Singer, Jean-Louis Scherrer to the music of hip hop and R&B.

Ebony Fashion Fair isn’t just a fashion indulgence, this organization is also dedicated to giving back to the community.  To date, the show has donated over $55 million to charitable organizations and scholarship funds.

Can any other fashion show production make an equal claim?

The show debuted in Chicago earlier this month, and will travel to 170 cities nationwide.  I recommend you check it out if you get the chance.

Here’s a preview of some of the hot fashion you will see at the show.

Fashion Of Olympic Proportion

If you had the opportunity to view the opening ceremonies at the Beijing Olympics, I’m sure you shared my sense of awe and appreciation of this mesmerizing production.  I was dazzled by the electrifying color and the sensational movement the costumes contributed to this monumental production covering 5,000 years of Chinese history.

First up, is the graceful dancer pictured below in her brilliant costume, supported by countless men in an effort to symbolize the notion that one person cannot achieve greatness with out the support of many.

In the next series of pictures, one may conclude that exquisite traditional dress was not limited to the female contingent of performers.  Here, you see a series of remarkably handsome ombre costumes and their respective movement. (*Note- Are those sneakers I see under their costumes?) :D

In another example of the many creating the One, these green costumes embellished with brilliant lights, moved with awe inspiring precision to create the below dove.  One interesting aside, famed Chinese film maker Zhang Yimou, originally chose black for the performers and at the last minute decided on the green.

Finally, after many segments involving solely men, the ladies had their turn to shine in these gowns which seem to have a little western Colonial influence with the hoop skirt.

I was so taken with the beauty of this show and the underlying symbolism.  Politics aside, this was one heck of a show.
