Comme Des Garcons for H&M Fall 2008

H&M has announced that Rei Kawakubo will collaborate with the discount design emporium come November 2008.  Her collection will include men and women’s collections along with some pieces for children.  The collection release will coincide with the launch of the second H&M store in Tokyo.

“Rei Kawakubo has been at the top of our wish list for a long time and we are thrilled that she has chosen to collaborate with us. We have tremendous respect for Kawakubo’s fashion philosophy of questioning fashion’s ingrained patterns, and admire her artistic approach to design. …explains Margareta van den Bosch, creative advisor, H&M.”

Rei Kawakubo who was born in Tokyo and interestingly, not being a trained fashion designer (she studied fine art and literature), dictated her designs verbally to pattern makers.

She now is responsible for 14 different brands, in shops spanning 25 countries, with nearly  700 employees.

Comme des Garcons has been described as specializing “in anti-fashion, austere, sometimes deconstructed garments, sometimes lacking a sleeve or other component.”

Here are some looks from her Spring and Autumn 2008 collections.

I will be interested to see what sort of collection she decides upon.  Not to mention the budget constraints she will have with fabric and materials.

Hmm…this is all beginning to sound like a Project Runway challenge.

My Thriller Video

Have you ever dreamed of being in a Michael Jackson video?  Now you can “virtually” star in the famed Thriller video by uploading 3 close up digital pictures of yourself to this site and tadaa, you’re a star!

Why all the fuss?  It’s the 25th anniversary of MJ’s groundbreaking video and a global campaign to help MJ save his Neverland Ranch.  I made that last part up, but it seems that the “King of Pop” has a few financial issues to concern himself with.  But I digress…

Back to your video.  I can imagine all sorts of debauchery ensuing with this opportunity.  These videos are popping up on YouTube and according to MJ’s Press Release, have been picked up by MTV.

Here’s an example, you be the judge…

Fashion Lesson #10 Natural Make Up

You may remember a previous post called “Can Make Up Make You Sick?”, where I discovered that cosmetics are not regulated by the Food and Drug Administration.  It was then that I decided to do a little research and find organic and non-synthetic alternatives to the cosmetics that I currently use.  Upon finding such products, I wanted to try them out to see if they were just as effective as their chemical laden cousins.

In beginning my research, I  learned that Minnesota, as of Jan. 1, 2008, banned the intentional use of mercury in mascara.  It seems that some cosmetic companies still use the heavy metal that can cause serious neurological damage as a preservative, much like vaccine companies have.

With further investigation, I found that conventional cosmetics contain all sorts of harmful preservatives and additives.  According to womenshealth.gov the Federal Government source for women’s health information, fragrances and preservatives are the main ingredients in cosmetics.

Products marked “fragrance-free” or “without perfume” means that no fragrances have been added to make the product smell good.

Preservatives in cosmetics are the second most common cause of skin problems. They prevent bacteria and fungus from growing in the product and protect products from damage caused by air or light. But preservatives can also cause the skin to become irritated and infected. Some examples of preservatives are:

  • paraben
  • imidazolidinyl urea
  • Quaternium-15
  • DMDM hydantoin
  • phenoxyethanol
  • formaldehyde

The ingredients below cannot be used, or their use is limited, in cosmetics. They may cause cancer or other serious health problems.

  • bithionol
  • mercury compounds
  • vinyl chloride
  • halogenated salicyanilides
  • zirconium complexes in aerosol sprays
  • chloroform
  • methylene chloride
  • chlorofluorocarbon propellants
  • hexachlorophene

This is merely the tip of the iceberg when it comes to harmful ingredients.  I highly encourage you to search these contents in the Cosmeticsinfo.org database for a more in depth look at their effects and what cosmetic products they are found in.  (I started to include them in this piece, but it became much too lengthy.)

So now we know that our cosmetics are not regulated and may contain some forms of harmful additives.  So what should we do?

I contacted Marj Melchiors, the Founder & President of Cosmetics Without Synthetics, Inc. and asked for a sampling of her products that I use everyday.  I wanted to find safe, organic and non-synthetic alternatives to cosmetics that I use each day.

Marj generously sent me two collections of eye shadows; one natural and the other in the plum family (I told her I have blue/gray eyes).  She also sent: two shades of foundation, eye liner powder, blush, lipstick, lipgloss and mascara.  All of which I will review for you.

But before I get into my review, I was pleased to find out that some of the makeup that is sold on allnaturalcosmetics.com also included Gluten Free and Vegan varieties,(if you are following a special diet you will appreciate this.)

Back to the review…  After using the products for approximately two weeks, I must tell you that I love the Earth’s Beauty mascara .

Several friends commented on how long my lashes looked.  I found that this mascara wore really well and was also easy to wash off.  Many times I have to work really, really hard to remove my mascara and I didn’t have a problem with this product.

In the eye shadow and blush group, I tested Earth’s Beauty and NVEY EcoNVEY Eco is a luxurious organic line of makeup that I highly encourage you to try.   I was impressed by all three products that I tested: Light Pink Blush (regardless of it not suiting my coloring); Medium Brown Eye Shadow; and the Pearly White Eye Shadow was excellent for highlighting the brow bone and the inner corners of my eyes.

The bulk of products that I received were from Earth’s Beauty which is created by Ms. Melchiors.   According to the product information, “the base of the products is organic/wildcrafter arrowroot with added natural colorings.”

I enjoyed using these products.  My only limitation was the colors provided.  This is in no way a reflection of the products.  Simply the fact that Ms. Melchiors was given insufficient information about me and has never seen a picture of me.  Therefore, short of using divination, she would not have been able to provide me with 100% compatible colors.  Lets face it, how often do we get home and discover products that we think we like do not suit us?

I tried each product and I have nothing but positive things to say.  Each color had a rich pigment and wore well.  I especially liked the Sunlight Eye Shadow and the Deep Walnut Eye Liner.  I haven’t used a powder liner before, (you first dip a wet applicator or brush in the powder and then apply) and I really appreciated the effect.  The powder liner also lasted longer than the usual eyeliner that I currently use.

Next, I tested the Miessence Foundations.  This line of Australian products “are the only skin care range in the world that are certified organic by third parties.”

I really have to be honest with this one.  I respect that it is organic and feel confident using it based on that fact.  However, there was just something about this foundation that I didn’t like.  I am not sure if it was the smell or the coverage, but I found that my usual foundation did a better job.  I would be interested to know how others feel about this brand including their experience.  (If you try it let me know!)

The last category I tested was lipstick/gloss. Both were from Earth’s Beauty.  I especially favored the Wild Rose Lip Glaze.  The color and texture was just right for me.

Trying to find the right cosmetics in general is a difficult task, but to find lines that are also organic and held to higher standards can be daunting.  I hope that you found this review useful.  If there is interest, I will share other on-line resources that I discovered.  Further, I am also seeking alternatives that one could purchase at their local drug store.  If you would like information concerning this topic in future Fashion Lessons, please let me know.

Pillowcases For A Cause…

12-5-2006-043

Children Raising Children

Before you trash an old pillowcase, think again.  In the spirit of Earth Month, take a pillowcase, new or gently used, and transform it into a darling little dress.

Little Dresses For Africa provide dresses made from a pillowcase through a simple pattern that anyone could follow.  The dresses will then be distributed to orphan girls in Malawi Africa.

Once the dresses are completed, they can be mailed to 24614 Curtis Drive, Brownstown, Michigan 48134. There will be another trip to Africa in June to distribute your dresses, so don’t procrastinate!

Here is a link to the pattern and another to the organization.  Take a look at this cute little dress “Veggie Mamma” made.

My Heavens…

How did they get her hair to do that?

20080407_pu_model_1

This was a recent ad for Aveda to “Pump Up the Volume”.  The texture on the bottom of her hair is so strange.  I wonder if they used hair pieces.  This all makes me think of America’s Next Top Model and the wild things they do for photo shoots.

What A Croc!

Since working on my post for Running With Heels I have had shoes on my brain.  I ran across this ad in this months addition in In Style magazine (my apologies for the quality).

what a crock!

The tagline in this advertisement is “It’s hard to believe the parents were ugly.”  Frankly, I think they are still ugly.

I understand that they are really comfortable (I have never tried a pair on), but I am having a hard time coveting these shoes.

Are there any Croc fans out there?  Am I crazy?

I will say that I do think the ‘adra’ style is a cute flip flop that I could see myself wearing as an everyday summer shoe.

What do you think?  Is this ad campaign a croc?

Running With Heels

Hi guys I apologize for my absence.  As I write this I am experiencing patterns of chills and extreme warmth.  I discovered yesterday that I have strep throat.  So to say the least I am not feeling well.  I had two days to take care of business at home and then as my present I won strep.

The doctor came back in my examination room yesterday after administering a test and said “Congratulations, you have strep throat!”  Lucky me…

Regularly scheduled posts are coming soon.  I need at least one more day to recover.

On another note, I am thrilled to announce that I was asked to be a guest blogger by the fabulous on-line magazine Running With Heels.  My story “Earth Day & Eco Shoes” will be featured on their site today.  I hope you have a chance to stop by and leave a comment. Click on the logo below to go right to the post.

Lyn Devon Fall/Winter 2008

Lyn Devon is another designer to watch according to Style.com.  There’s no doubt that this talented designer who once designed for the likes of Ralph Lauren and Zac Posen is making a name for herself and winning fans all over the world.

Lyn Devon began her business out of her apartment basement back in 2005.  Now, she has earned accolades such as the “Rising Star Award” in Women’s Ready to Wear, bestowed to her in 2007 by Fashion Group International.  Not to mention a roster of celebrities such as Sara Jessica Parker, Julia Stiles and Mena Suvari.

In February, Ms. Devon granted the blog FABSUGAR an exclusive interview.  In that interview, Ms. Devon revealed her inspiration for her Fall/Winter 2008 collection.

“This season I started with armor. A warrior. An artful, independent spirit — which is always my muse. I really wanted to play with the idea of hard and soft and having these structural elements but keeping it feminine and really contoured to the body. I definitely brought it closer to the body this season. I was feeling sexy.”

When I first reviewed this collection, I thought it was more architectural and futuristic.  Take a look…

I was really struck by this collection over the other 9 designers that were chosen.  Her designs are modern and edgy, but not so edgy that you need to sport a mohawk and a nose piercing (at least not everyday).

Continued success to Lyn Devon.  This fashion lover looks forward to her Spring 2009 collection.

April Fools

I have never been much of a prankster.  My face always gives it away; a terrible liar.  This being April Fools Day, I no doubt will hear Basketball Sensei recount his best April Fools Day ruse.

I get the same story every year, reliving the glorious day when he called one of his best buddies who is a huge Arnold Schwarzenegger fan.  He told him that the famed Mr. Olympia was going to be at a local gym and he better hurry up and get down there.  Well his friend took the bait and scurried down to this gym immediately.  Once there, the friend proceeded to scour the gym for his hero.  Unable to find him, the friend in a panic that he missed Arnold, asked the front desk where he might be.  The ruse was over and the truth revealed, he had been punked.

This friend tried in vain to get Basketball Sensei back, but the prank was thinly veiled and never worked.

6832_1_230

One man however pulled the ruse of a lifetime, and topped the list of Trend Hunter’s Top 40 Pranks and Prank Ideas For April Fools Day.  Juan Isidro Casilla took a topless photo of himself last March, added the Gucci Logo and a perfume bottle then off he sent it to prominent Swiss magazine.  Along with the photo, the story goes that he asked them to publish a two page spread of the advertisement in one of their issues.

After the magazine agreed to publish the advertisement and in fact printed the two page put-on, Mr. Casilla directed the company to bill Gucci directly.  The sum? $50,000.

According to Trend Hunter, this wasn’t Mr. Casilla’s first prank.  “He previously posed as a pop singer… And today, he claims to have a modeling career, launched by his publicity stunt.”
